Decoding VEGAN cosmetics

While the word VEGAN is well known in the food industry, it is increasingly making its presence felt on cosmetics labels, and represents a key claim for today’s consumers. The worldwide market for VEGAN cosmetics is expected to reach $25 billion by 2025, or around 3% of the global beauty market.

What does VEGAN mean for a cosmetic product?

A VEGAN cosmetic product is one that guarantees the absence of animal raw materials and products of animal origin, and is part of a lifestyle that opposes the exploitation and suffering of animals. Please note, however, that cosmetic testing on animals has been FORBIDDEN in Europe since 2013.

Why this attraction to VEGAN?

It is important to remember that this VEGAN trend has no official certification, but has numerous private labels, such as those listed below (non-exhaustive list):

EVE VEGAN (Expertise Vegane Europe) :

a standard recognized as one of the most reliable and comprehensive in its category. It guarantees a multitude of criteria, including

  • no animal testing on foreign markets
  • absence of animal flesh
  • absence of ingredients of animal origin in the product
  • no ingredients of animal origin in the packaging
  • organically grown vegan ingredients (for EVE VEGAN 02 level)
  • control audits (mode of achievement: audit of compliance with EVE VEGAN standards)

This label is issued by the Vegan Society, one of the world’s oldest vegan organizations. The label was created in 1944 by an English association to encourage and promote veganism. It guarantees :

  • no animal testing
  • the absence of animal flesh
  • no ingredients of animal origin in the product
  • no ingredients of animal origin in the packaging

PETA’s cruelty-free label:

It was created by PETA, an association for the ethical treatment of animals, with the aim of recognizing and protecting the rights of all animals. It guarantees :

  • no animal testing
  • the absence of animal flesh (for the “cruelty free and vegan” logo)
  • the absence of ingredients of animal origin in the product (for the “cruelty free and vegan” logo)
  • the absence of ingredients of animal origin in the packaging (for the “cruelty free and vegan” logo)
  • absence of animal testing on foreign markets

Le label Cruelty Free International (Leaping Bunny)

is a program of the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). The “leaping bunny” has been in existence since 1996, and is actively supported by Cruelty Free International, which considers it to be the most authoritative standard on the subject of respect for animals in the cosmetics industry. It guarantees :

  • no animal testing
  • no animal testing on foreign markets
  • control audits (carried out by independent organizations chosen by the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetics)

How does the cosmetics industry meet this need?

Many emerging brands, including Indie Brands, as well as major beauty players recognize the growing importance of this demand and are adjusting their practices accordingly. Suppliers are offering vegetable, mineral or synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients, while guaranteeing comparable or even superior performance and quality. They all communicate transparently about their production processes and ethical commitments, enabling VEGAN consumers (but not only) to make choices in complete confidence. This development in the cosmetics industry is evidence of a growing awareness of the importance of sustainability, ethics and respect for values in the field of beauty.

Miyoshi Europe is no exception, with its global values of respect for people and the environment reflected in a CSR charter and a growing number of actions in this area, including an Ecovadis 2023 Gold Medal (74/100) and an A- rating for Climate awarded by the CDP.
